Mi Amigo's - Candland Family Owned Mexican Restaurant

Next time you're passing through the deserts of Southwestern USA, stop by the Candlands' place for some comida Mexicana. Noel Candland and his son David own a restaurant chain in Arizona called "Mi Amigo's." I've never been, but everyone I know from Arizona sings its praises.

Noel is a descendent of David Candland and his wife Hannah. Noel is also the nephew of J. Willard Marriott.

Candland Coat of Arms?

Three sources have claimed the existence of a Candland Family Coat of Arms.

(1) Harold Arthur Candland, while serving as a mormon missionary in England in the mid 1920s, met up with some British Candlands and they gave him a Candland Coat of Arms. Years later, Harold's grandson Matthew Candland did quite a bit of research on this and even made application to the College of Arms in England to research the Candland Coat of Arms. Unfortunately, while this coat of arms did indeed come down through the Candland family it originated from David Candland's step father (Paramour Ashenden). The "Candland Coat of Arms" was actually from Mr. Ashenden's family.

(2) Grace Maggie Candland (1871-1953) included a Coat of Arms in her work "David Candland: His Life and Work" and said that she was unable to locate or define the outstanding act of service which accorded the family a Coat of Arms. She did not mention her source of this Coat of Arms, but it may be the same Coat of Arms that Harold Candland brought home from England.

(3) The House of Names features a Candland Coat of Arms ... but many will speculate whether these are reliable or profit-driven pieces.

Origin of Our Name: Theory #2

Another theory asserts that the Candland name was originally "de Cantelupo" meaning "from Cauntelo" (a place in Northern France.) See the House of Names Website.

These authors assert that our ancestors came from Northern France to England and then in 1172 assisted in the Norman invasion and were then granted land in Southern Ireland which they held up through 1640 (and lost during Cromwell's invasion).

This research asserts that the following names are all variations of the name Candland: Cantillon, Cantilon, Cantlin, Cantilupe, Cantlowe, Cantelowe, Cantell, Cantillion, Cantlon, and Cantlow.
