Senator Candland

William D. Candland, oldest son of David and Hannah Candland, was a state Senator in Utah. Apparently, this guy had a fiery personality. I've found several interesting tidbits about him. In particular, a Deseret News article from 1965 which recounts:

Sen. Candland's voice raged on for 2 1/2 hours and did not digress from this theme: Democrats are an abomination. Finally, somebody interrupted the oratory to say "Senator Candland, you are saying some raw things about us Democrats. But isn't it true your daughter just married a prominent young Democrat?" Sen. Candland hammered his fist against his desk and thundered this reply: "Yes she did. It's the regret of my life, and let the record show it!"

Bob Candland, a descendent of Willie D. Candland, told me the following via email:

"The comment by W. D. about his son-in-law Calvin Rawlings being a Democrat, etc is true. However, Uncle Cal told the same story with humor and a twinkle, as though WD may have been kidding? WD would have been proud that Cal married his daughter Ruth because he became a very prominent and successful attorney in SLC (although a Democrat). Their lovely daughter Elaine lives not too far from me."

The Deseret News 11/22/2010 ran an article on President John F Kennedy visiting SLC in 1960 & 1963. They included some old photos and a couple show WD Candland's son-in-law Cal Rawlings, Democratic National Committeman and SLC attorney, with JFK (pictures # 14 & # 43). This is the one about whom WD said, "Yes she did. It's the regret of my life, and let the record show it!" about Cal the Democrat marrying his daughter.
