The Candland / Marriott Connection

Many of the American Candlands are also members of the Marriott family, as in, Marriott Hotels. Harry Candland (1903-1962) married Eva Fontella Marriott (1905-1992). Her brother, J. Willard Marriott Sr (1900-1985) was the founder of Marriott Hotels.

Senator Candland

William D. Candland, oldest son of David and Hannah Candland, was a state Senator in Utah. Apparently, this guy had a fiery personality. I've found several interesting tidbits about him. In particular, a Deseret News article from 1965 which recounts:

Sen. Candland's voice raged on for 2 1/2 hours and did not digress from this theme: Democrats are an abomination. Finally, somebody interrupted the oratory to say "Senator Candland, you are saying some raw things about us Democrats. But isn't it true your daughter just married a prominent young Democrat?" Sen. Candland hammered his fist against his desk and thundered this reply: "Yes she did. It's the regret of my life, and let the record show it!"

David & Ann Woodhouse Candland

Here's an older David Candland and his wife Ann Woodhouse Candland. I believe this was published in a book of Utah Pioneer histories. Does anyone have the text?

David Candland and Wife

This photo has been widely circulated and identified as David Candland with Annie Woodhouse Candland by some, and David with Mary Ann Barton Candland by others. Please comment with your opinions. Personally, I believe it's Annie Woodhouse Candland.

Candland: President of Disney Japan

Paul Candland, a descendent of David Candland's son Arthur Charles Candland, has done the family name proud with his appointment as President of The Walt Disney Company Japan. A press release dated 21 May 2007 said:

TOKYO -- The Walt Disney Company today announced the appointment of Paul Candland as the managing director of The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd., effective June 1, 2007. In addition to his current role as head of Disney ABC International Television and Disney Channel, Candland will be responsible for the company's local strategy development, new business initiatives, and local brand marketing in Japan.

Candland on MTV

Anyone here a fan of the MTV reality series "The City"? If so, you may recognize Chris Candland of New York. Chris is a descendant of David Candland and his wife Ann Woodhouse Candland.

Candlands on Halo

Dave and Marcy Candland and family appeared on this short documentary which appeared on the Halo 3 Legendary Edition bonus disk. Dave is a descendant of David Candland (1819-1902) and his wife Hannah. He designs the user interface for Halo video games (XBox). Go Candlands!
